Curology's Walmart test converts prescription skin care at 5x online rate

Physical retail turned a slow digital funnel into a same-day close by moving the prescription question downstream.

Source Glossy ↗

Curology tested prescription skin care at Walmart and saw conversion rates run five times higher than its online channel, according to Glossy. The brand placed diagnostic kiosks in select Walmart locations, letting shoppers answer skin-care questions and connect with a provider on-site. The customer walks out with product the same day if cleared, or gets a prescription routed to pickup within days.

The brand moved the friction point. Online, Curology asks for a skin questionnaire and prescription approval before a shopper touches product. That sequence works for someone already convinced, but it kills casual browse. At Walmart, the shopper picks up the tube, reads the back, decides they want it, then answers the medical questions. The prescription step becomes a checkout formality instead of an entry gate. The funnel inverts: interest first, qualification second.

This works because physical retail changes the order of belief. Online, a new customer has to trust the brand, fill out a form, wait for approval, then see if the product works. That is four decisions stacked in sequence, each one a place to bail. In-store, the shopper holds the product, reads the ingredient list, sees the price, and makes one decision: do I want this. The prescription question comes after intent is established. Conversion jumps because the hard ask happens when the customer is already leaning in.

The steal for a small physical-product brand is to move your hardest ask downstream. If you sell anything with a barrier—a subscription, a commitment, a multi-step onboarding—let the customer say yes to the thing before you ask them to do the work. For a brand selling refillable anything, let them buy the first unit as a one-time purchase at full price, then offer the subscription at checkout or in the package. For a product that requires setup or customization, sell a simple version first and offer the full experience as an upsell after delivery. For anything that needs explanation, put a scannable code on the package that goes to a two-minute video, not a landing page with a form.

If you are testing retail, do not hand the retailer your existing online SKU and hope. Build a version that lets someone buy on impulse and qualify later. That could mean a starter kit that does not require account creation, or a QR code that goes to a one-question survey instead of a full onboarding flow. The goal is to let the shopper leave the store with product in hand, even if the full experience requires a follow-up step. Curology proved that moving the prescription question from the front door to the register multiplies conversions. You do not need a pharmacy license to apply the same sequencing to your own friction.

The broader pattern is that physical retail is a better channel for products that sound complicated. If your product has a learning curve, a subscription model, or a question the customer has to answer before they buy, a store shelf lets you delay that question until after the customer wants the thing. That is worth testing, even if your brand started online.

The takeaway
Move your hardest ask to the moment after the customer decides they want the product, not before.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub.
