Brands pull creators into product design, turning influencer contracts into R&D partnerships

Digiday research shows creator roles expanding from campaign work into product development — a shift that physical-product brands can copy on small budgets.

Brands are moving creators upstream. According to Digiday research, companies now partner with influencers not only for seasonal campaigns and product launches but to help develop new products from the start. The creator becomes a design collaborator, not just a campaign asset.

The mechanics are straightforward: a brand brings a creator into product development conversations before the product exists. The creator provides input on features, design, packaging, or positioning based on their audience's preferences. The brand ships the product, and the creator promotes it with firsthand credibility because they helped build it. The endorsement carries more weight than a paid post because the creator's name is on the design.

This works because it solves the authenticity problem that plagues influencer marketing. A creator promoting a product they helped design can speak to why specific features exist, what problems the product solves, and how it differs from alternatives. Their audience knows the creator had a hand in it, so skepticism drops. The brand gets both product feedback and a built-in launch amplifier. The creator gets a deeper relationship and often a revenue share, which aligns incentives beyond a flat fee.

The shift also reflects a broader change in how brands view creators. Instead of treating them as media channels to rent, brands are recognizing that creators have direct insight into customer preferences because they talk to their audiences daily. A beauty creator knows which ingredients their followers ask about. A fitness creator knows which features matter in a water bottle. A pet creator knows what dog owners complain about in current products. That knowledge has value before the product is designed, not just after it launches.

A small physical-product brand can run this play without a massive influencer budget. Start by identifying three to five micro-creators in your category with 5,000 to 50,000 engaged followers. Reach out with a simple pitch: you're developing a new product and want their input in exchange for co-promotion rights and a small revenue share on sales they drive. Most micro-creators will say yes because it's more interesting than a standard paid post and the upside is uncapped.

Set up a 30-minute call with each creator. Ask specific questions: What do their followers complain about in current products? What features do they wish existed? What would make them choose one product over another? Take notes. Look for overlapping answers across creators — those are the signals worth building into the product.

Once the product is designed, send prototypes to the creators who gave input. Ask for feedback again. Make small adjustments if the feedback is consistent. Then offer each creator a 10 to 15 percent affiliate commission and the right to say they helped design it. Give them early access to sell before the public launch. The cost is the affiliate payout, which only happens if they sell. The upside is that their endorsement is credible because they were part of the process, and their audience knows it.

This approach works at any scale because the value exchange is real. The creator gets influence over a product they'll promote and a revenue share. The brand gets product feedback and launch distribution. The audience gets a product shaped by someone whose taste they trust. No one is faking enthusiasm for a flat fee.

The broader pattern here is that the line between product development and marketing is blurring for physical goods. Brands that bring customers or their proxies into the design process end up with better products and easier launches. Creators are simply the most efficient proxy because they aggregate audience preferences and have distribution built in.

The takeaway
Bring micro-creators into product design for feedback and co-promotion rights — you get R&D insight and launch distribution for an affiliate fee.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders. Net-thirty corporate terms, NDA-standard white-label — your name on the work, or none at all.
