Gap Inc. and Staples turn employees into brand creators to solve content shortage

Both retailers built internal creator programs that let staff produce branded content, bypassing traditional influencer costs.

Gap Inc. and Staples are running employee creator programs that convert staff into content producers, according to Digiday. The retailers give employees the brief, the product, and the distribution channel—then let them shoot, edit, and post as if they were independent influencers. The programs address the creator shortage and rising influencer rates without adding headcount or agency fees.

Both companies built internal platforms where employees opt in, receive brand guidelines, and submit content for review. Gap Inc. runs its program across Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta, pulling from retail staff and corporate roles. Staples recruits from store teams and distribution centers. Approved posts go live on the employee's personal social accounts and the brand's owned channels. Employees get visibility and in some cases small bonuses or product. The brand gets first-party content at a fraction of traditional creator costs.

The mechanic works because the employee already understands the product, the customer, and the brand voice. A store associate at Old Navy knows which denim fit sells and why. A warehouse lead at Staples knows which packing tape contractors reorder. That product knowledge translates into authentic testimonial content without the learning curve or skepticism that comes with paid influencer contracts. The employee's social graph—friends, family, local community—skews closer to the brand's target customer than a macro influencer's audience. Engagement rates run higher because the content reads as personal recommendation, not sponsored post.

The second advantage is speed and volume. Gap Inc. can activate dozens of employees across regions in the time it takes to negotiate one influencer contract. Staples ran a back-to-school push with employee creators posting desk setups, label-maker hacks, and supply-list tips. The content flowed in daily, covered multiple product lines, and required no media budget. The brand controlled the message through review gates but avoided the creative direction overhead of a traditional shoot.

A small physical-product brand can run the same play with a team of three to ten. Identify employees or contractors who already use the product and have a social presence, even modest. Offer a simple deal: post once a week featuring the product in use, tag the brand, and get early access to new SKUs or a $50 product credit per approved post. Write a one-page brief with three to five talking points and visual guidelines—nothing elaborate. Set up a shared folder for submissions and a quick Slack approval flow. No contracts, no agencies, no media spend.

Start with one employee as a test case. If you sell meal-prep containers, recruit the operations lead who already packs lunch in your product. If you sell work gloves, recruit the warehouse manager who wears them daily. Give them three posts to try: one how-to, one before-and-after, one testimonial. Track engagement and conversion using UTM links or a dedicated discount code. If the first posts pull comments or click-throughs, expand to two or three more employees. Budget $200 to $500 a month in product cost and incentives for a small team. The content doubles as user-generated proof and as organic reach into networks you would not otherwise access.

The pattern scales without proportion to budget. Gap Inc. and Staples built platforms because they have thousands of employees. A ten-person brand runs it in a spreadsheet and a group chat. The core trade is the same: product knowledge and personal network in exchange for visibility and small perks. The brand gets content that looks like testimony because it is testimony. The employee gets a low-stakes side channel that builds their own presence while supporting the company. No production crew, no influencer negotiation, no media buy. Just the product, the brief, and the employee who already knows how to sell it.

The takeaway
Recruit employees who use your product, give them a brief and a small incentive, and let them post testimonials on their personal accounts.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders. Net-thirty corporate terms, NDA-standard white-label — your name on the work, or none at all.
