Hoka embedded live Strava stats into OOH to turn runners into real-time proof

The brand fed athlete performance data into digital billboards where runners train, making every posted mile a proof point.

Hoka pulled live running data from Strava and displayed it on digital out-of-home placements positioned along popular training routes, according to Marketing Dive. The campaign fed real athlete performance—distance, pace, elevation—into billboards and transit screens at the moment and location where other runners were moving, turning product performance into visual, data-backed proof.

The mechanics were straightforward. Hoka connected its OOH inventory to Strava's API, pulling aggregated or individual run stats and displaying them on digital screens in high-traffic running corridors. A runner finishing a loop might see their own pace or the morning's fastest split on a billboard twenty yards from where they stand. The message shifts every few minutes as new data arrives, so the creative stays live and specific to the cohort passing the screen.

This worked because it collapsed the gap between claim and proof. Traditional athletic advertising shows an athlete on a poster. This campaign showed the data trail of athletes who just ran past the poster. The runner sees not an aspirational image but a peer-verified result, delivered in the context where they just tested the same shoes on the same pavement. Proximity and immediacy do the persuasion work. When the proof is live and local, skepticism drops.

The second mechanism is ambient competition. A runner glancing at a screen that displays today's top local split internalizes a benchmark without being sold. The brand becomes the scoreboard, not the salesperson. The shoe is implied infrastructure—what everyone posting those numbers happens to be wearing. This shifts Hoka from product to platform, a subtle repositioning that builds loyalty without a single line of copy about cushioning or geometry.

A small physical-product brand can run the same play on a modest budget by feeding customer data into screens where the customer will see it in use context. Start with one digital OOH screen in a high-density location relevant to your product—$500 to $2,000 per week depending on market. Partner with a review or user-generated content platform that has an API or exportable feed. Display real customer stats, times, weights lifted, miles covered, recipes cooked, whatever metric your product improves. Rotate every five to ten minutes. Keep it anonymous or first-name-only unless you have explicit permission.

If a screen is out of budget, project the same feed onto a window or exterior wall using a small $300 projector at your retail location or pop-up. Or run the feed on a large monitor inside the store, positioned so passersby see it through the glass. The goal is to make the proof visible in the physical space where the decision happens. A coffee roaster can display brew times and tasting notes from this morning's customers. A bike shop can show the week's longest rides, posted by people who bought their last tune-up there. A kitchen brand can loop recipe completions from an integration with a meal-planning app.

The copy is minimal. Let the data do the work. A single line of context: "Local runs this week" or "Meals cooked with this pan, last 7 days." No call to action. No discount. Just the scoreboard. The product is the connective tissue between the person on the street and the numbers on the screen.

The broader pattern is proof in situ. The most credible endorsement is the one that happens in the same place and time as the buying decision, sourced from people the buyer recognizes as peers. Digital infrastructure now makes this cheap and updatable. The screen becomes a live window into how your product performs when the buyer is standing in the exact context where they will use it.

The takeaway
Feed live customer performance data into a screen where other customers will see it in the moment they decide to buy.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
