Instacart deploys Shrek and Scooby-Doo to sell AI shopping assistant, reduces friction with licensed familiarity

Using cartoon icons to introduce technical features turns abstract AI into a trusted friend recommendation.

In plain words

When launching a technical feature, create a character to voice it—customers trust personalities faster than algorithms.

Instacart launched a campaign using licensed characters including Shrek, Scooby-Doo, and other recognizable icons to promote its new AI shopping assistant, according to Marketing Dive. The grocery delivery platform is banking on character-driven familiarity to soften the introduction of algorithmic recommendation technology to millions of shoppers who may distrust or misunderstand AI.

The campaign pairs cartoon personalities with specific use cases for the AI assistant: Shrek might suggest ingredients for a swamp-themed dinner, Scooby-Doo could recommend snacks for a mystery-solving marathon. Each character delivers product suggestions in their voice, framing the AI not as surveillance or manipulation but as a helpful sidekick the user already knows. The creative executes across digital channels where Instacart reaches active shoppers during consideration moments.

This works because it borrows trust. Consumers have spent decades building parasocial relationships with these characters through films, shows, and merchandise. When Shrek endorses a feature, the brain processes it as a recommendation from a known entity, not a cold algorithmic nudge. The character acts as a cultural intermediary, translating the unfamiliar mechanic of machine learning into the familiar frame of a friend suggesting what to buy. Instacart is not asking users to trust AI; it is asking them to trust Shrek, who happens to be powered by AI.

The timing aligns with broader platform anxiety around AI adoption. Shipt, the Target-owned competitor, announced its own AI assistant the same week, signaling that discovery and recommendation engines are now table stakes in grocery delivery. But raw feature parity does not drive usage. Shoppers need a reason to try the assistant once and a reason to return. Characters provide both: initial curiosity and repeated comfort.

For a physical product brand with a modest budget, the steal is this: license or create a mascot that carries the emotional weight your feature cannot. If you are launching a subscription box for dog treats, do not explain the algorithm that personalizes each shipment. Partner with a local pet influencer or illustrator to create a character—say, a cartoon basset hound named Biscuit—who "picks" the treats each month. Feature Biscuit in your email flows, on the shipping insert, in the unboxing video. The character becomes the face of the system, and the system becomes trustworthy because the character is.

You do not need Shrek's licensing budget. You need a character your customer already wants to hear from. If you sell camping gear, that might be a illustrated bear who "recommends" gear based on trail difficulty. If you sell tea, a fictional herbalist from a cozy fictional village. The character does not need backstory or cinematic universe—just enough personality that when it says "try this," the customer feels guided, not sold.

Run the play in three steps. First, define the job your feature does: recommend, personalize, remind. Second, create or license a character whose archetype matches that job—wise, playful, protective. Third, let the character do all customer-facing communication about the feature. Your emails, your app notifications, your product inserts—all voiced by the character, never by the algorithm. The customer opts in to the character, and the feature comes along for the ride.

The broader pattern is abstraction cover. Any time you introduce a feature that feels technical or invasive, wrap it in something cultural and comforting. Instacart is not the first to do this—insurance companies have used geckos and ducks for decades—but the application to AI-driven product recommendation is newly relevant as every commerce platform races to deploy personalization engines that customers do not yet trust.

For the operator

Test character-led messaging in one email flow against control; measure click-through on AI feature adoption, not just open rate.

For the house

Request character-voiced product recommendations in vendor portals to reduce decision fatigue when evaluating AI-suggested SKU assortments at scale.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori heritage press through approved vendors · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
