Instacart Used Shrek and Scooby-Doo to Sell Its AI Assistant — Here's the Mechanism That Worked

Licensed characters made complex software feel familiar, driving adoption by borrowing trust from nostalgic IP.

Instacart launched an AI shopping assistant and immediately faced the problem every SaaS tool faces when it ships physical-world utility: nobody trusts a black box to pick their groceries. So the company enlisted Shrek, Scooby-Doo, and other Warner Bros. Discovery characters to do the explaining, according to Marketing Dive. The campaign ran across social, streaming, and in-app prompts. No adoption figures were disclosed, but the move signals a documented shift in how platforms sell invisible technology attached to tangible goods.

The mechanics were straightforward. Instacart created video spots and digital assets in which the licensed characters interacted with the AI assistant as if it were a helpful friend. Shrek asked it to find ingredients for a swamp recipe. Scooby-Doo searched for snacks. The assistant responded in plain language, surfaced product options, and completed orders. The characters reacted with approval. The spots ran on YouTube, Instagram, and within the Instacart app itself, targeted at users who had not yet tried the assistant feature. Warner Bros. Discovery provided the character rights and co-promoted the campaign across its own channels.

The underlying mechanism is borrowed trust. A new AI feature is abstract and unproven. A decades-old character is concrete and pre-trusted. By pairing the two, Instacart reduced the cognitive load required to understand what the assistant does and made the act of trying it feel lower-risk. The characters also gave the campaign cultural fluency — parents recognized them, kids demanded interaction, and the tone stayed light instead of technical. The strategy works because licensed IP carries emotional weight that no amount of feature-list copy can match. The viewer does not need to read a privacy policy or understand natural language processing. They see Shrek getting his onions delivered and think, if it works for him, it works for me.

A small physical-product brand can run this play without a Warner Bros. contract. The mechanism is not the license itself but the proxy endorsement. Find a character, mascot, or spokesperson your customer already trusts and have them demonstrate your product in use. If you sell meal kits, collaborate with a micro-influencer whose audience matches your buyer — not for a testimonial, but for a how-to video where they use your kit to solve a real dinner problem. If you sell hardware tools, partner with a YouTube maker channel and let them build something on camera with your product as the quiet enabler. The cost is product cost plus a flat collaboration fee, often $500 to $2,000 for a creator with 10,000 to 50,000 engaged followers. The format is the same: the trusted figure encounters a problem, your product solves it, they react naturally. No script that sounds like a script. No call to action until the description box. The viewer absorbs proof by watching someone they already believe.

The broader pattern is that abstract products need concrete demonstrations, and the fastest way to make a demonstration credible is to borrow someone else's credibility. Instacart could have listed the assistant's features in a carousel ad. Instead, they let Shrek show it working. The difference is not production budget. The difference is the viewer's willingness to pay attention. If your product does something new or unfamiliar, find the person your customer would trust to try it first, and let them do the explaining. The rest is repetition and distribution.

The takeaway
Pair your unfamiliar product with a familiar face — borrowed trust beats feature lists when the buyer does not yet know what you do.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
