Knix Landed 350 Target Doors by Building Direct Revenue First, Then Proving Shelf Velocity

The intimates brand used seven years of owned customer data to negotiate terms and assortment no startup could.

According to Glossy, Knix just opened in 350 Target locations across the United States, the largest wholesale expansion in the brand's history. The move shifts Knix from a primarily direct-to-consumer intimates business into omnichannel distribution at national retail scale. Target does not hand out 350 doors to unproven brands. The retailer demands evidence that product will turn, that margin structure works, and that the brand can support velocity without cannibalizing its own channel. Knix spent seven years building that proof.

Knix launched in 2013 and grew its revenue to an estimated $100 million by 2021 selling bras, underwear, and loungewear directly through its own site and a small number of wholesale partnerships. The brand controlled customer acquisition, owned the email file, and refined product based on direct feedback and repeat purchase data. By the time Knix approached Target, it had margin room to absorb wholesale economics, SKU-level sell-through history, and a customer base that already shopped at Target. The retailer could model the partnership with confidence because Knix brought numbers, not a pitch deck.

The mechanism is proof of concept at owned scale before asking a retailer to bet shelf space. Target allocates linear footage based on projected turns per square foot. A brand with no transaction history forces the buyer to guess. A brand with years of SKU performance, geographic density maps, and demographic overlap can show exactly which products will move in which zip codes. Knix used its DTC data to propose an assortment tailored to Target's customer, then backed it with replenishment capability and marketing support that kept sell-through high enough to earn reorders and expansion.

The second lever is margin architecture. Wholesale typically requires 50 percent off retail to the retailer, plus co-op marketing, plus chargebacks for underperformance. A brand that sells only through wholesale has no room to absorb those costs and still fund growth. Knix kept DTC as its profit engine, allowing it to enter Target at terms that worked for both sides without destroying unit economics. The direct channel subsidized the wholesale learning curve, and the wholesale channel built brand awareness that fed the direct funnel. The flywheel runs both directions.

A small physical-product brand copies this by building one strong owned channel first, then using that data to pitch retail. Start with a Shopify store or Amazon storefront and drive 1,000 transactions across 10 to 15 SKUs. Track which products have the highest repeat rate, the lowest return rate, and the best margin after fulfillment. Use that data to approach a regional retailer: a local chain, a specialty boutique group, or a single Target or Walmart store through a local buyer program. Propose three to five hero SKUs with six months of sell-through data attached. Offer to staff a demo day or provide co-op creative using your existing content. Start with 10 doors, prove velocity, then expand. The pitch is not your brand story. The pitch is their sales per square foot, backed by numbers you already proved.

Knix did not guess its way into 350 Targets. It bought the credibility with years of owned transactions, then translated that credibility into terms a retailer could model. The expansion is the outcome, not the strategy. The strategy was building a data asset valuable enough to trade for shelf space.

The takeaway
Build owned-channel proof first, then use SKU-level performance data to pitch retail with projections the buyer can trust.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
