Kroger Precision Marketing grew ad profit 24% by turning checkout data into CPG media budgets

Kroger's Precision Marketing ad unit grew profit 24% in the second quarter of 2024, according to Digiday's analysis of the retailer's latest earnings release. That marks the fastest growth rate the unit has posted since 2021, driven by CPG brands redirecting trade spend toward on-site display, offsite retargeting, and closed-loop measurement tied to actual purchases at the register.

The mechanism is simple: Kroger controls both the media surface and the conversion event. A CPG brand buying search ads on Amazon or Meta pays to reach shoppers but cannot confirm which impressions converted into basket adds. Kroger closes that loop. The retailer sells display placements on its own dot-com and app, retargeting segments built from loyalty card and transaction data, and in-store screen inventory at checkout and endcap. Every impression ties to a hashed customer ID. Brands see which households saw the ad, which added the SKU, and which checked out. No probabilistic match, no survey panel. The conversion data lives in the same database as the media log.

CPG advertisers have shifted dollars accordingly. Trade marketing budgets—historically spent on slotting fees, co-op circulars, and price promotions—now fund programmatic campaigns inside retail media networks because the attribution is direct and the audience is in-market. Kroger competes with Walmart Connect, Amazon Ads, and Instacart for that spend, but the profit acceleration suggests it is winning incremental budget rather than cannibalizing existing line items. The 24% growth lands during a quarter when most digital ad platforms reported single-digit increases.

A small physical-product brand can run the same play without owning a grocery chain. The steal is to position your owned channel—email list, SMS subscribers, or repeat buyer file—as a closed-loop media buy for a complementary brand. If you sell coffee, offer a tea brand paid placement in your post-purchase email in exchange for a flat fee or rev-share. If you sell fitness apparel, sell a supplement brand a dedicated send to your list, tracked by UTM. The value proposition mirrors Kroger's: the advertiser reaches an audience already converted on the category, and you provide proof of incremental sales via affiliate dashboard or Shopify analytics.

The structure is a one-page media kit. List your audience size, average open rate, and purchase frequency. Offer three tiers: a dedicated email blast at a fixed CPM, a product feature in your next shipment insert, or a bundled cross-promotion where both brands mail each other's customer files. Charge enough to beat your own margin on a single unit sale. If your average order margin is fifteen dollars and you have five thousand email subscribers, a dedicated send priced at three hundred dollars pays better than selling twenty units yourself, and the advertiser gets a names-and-receipts conversion report your Instagram ad could never provide.

The broader pattern is that any brand with a repeat buyer file now operates a media network. Kroger monetizes transaction data at scale; a two-person brand monetizes it at the account level. Both plays work because the attribution closes on the same platform that sold the impression.

The takeaway
Kroger turned loyalty data into a 24% profit jump by selling CPG brands closed-loop ad placements tied to real purchases.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
