PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, and Keurig Dr Pepper add QR codes to every package as connected standard

The three giants turn packaging into a scannable engagement layer — small brands can steal the mechanic for pennies per unit.

PepsiCo, the Coca-Cola Company, and Keurig Dr Pepper are adding QR codes to their packaging across product lines, according to NBC News. The three manufacturers represent the overwhelming majority of U.S. soda volume, which means connected packaging is now an industry standard, not an experiment.

The move converts every can, bottle, and multipack into a scannable surface. A consumer pulls out their phone, scans the code, and lands on a brand-controlled page — a loyalty enrollment form, a recipe hub, a sweepstakes entry, or a direct product claim. The packaging no longer ends its job at the register. It becomes the first touch in a owned-channel relationship.

This works because the QR code collapses the gap between physical purchase and digital capture. Traditional packaging requires a consumer to remember a URL, search a brand name, or hunt for a social handle. The QR code removes all three steps. The scan happens in the moment of consumption — when the product is in hand, the brand is top of mind, and the friction to engage is near zero. PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are not adding QR codes for novelty. They are adding them because the conversion rate from scan to enrollment is measurably higher than any call-to-action printed in ink.

The mechanism is format-agnostic. A QR code costs nothing to generate and pennies to print. A small brand running a 5,000-unit production batch can add a scannable code to the label for the same per-unit cost as a text block. The difference is what happens after the scan. A giant sends the consumer to a loyalty platform with conditional discounts and gamified points. A small brand sends the consumer to a Typeform that collects an email and a product preference, then triggers a welcome sequence in ConvertKit. Same mechanic, different scale.

The steal is this: pick one conversion goal, generate one QR code, and add it to your next print run. If you sell a consumable — coffee, hot sauce, candles, supplements — the goal is email capture for repeat purchase. If you sell a gift or novelty item, the goal is referral: scan to share a discount link. If you sell a premium or technical product, the goal is education: scan to watch a use-case video. The code goes wherever your branding currently sits — back label, interior flap, hang tag, insert card. No app required. No platform dependency. Just a link shortener, a landing page, and a single line of copy: *Scan to unlock your next order* or *Scan to see how it's made* or *Scan to send a friend 15% off*.

The production addition is minimal. Most label printers and packaging vendors generate QR codes on request at no incremental charge. If you run print-on-demand or short-run digital labels, you add the QR as a static asset in your label file and it prints automatically on every unit. If you run offset or flexo at higher volume, you request the code as a plate element and it becomes part of the standing artwork. The only variable cost is the landing page. A Carrd page or a Google Form costs nothing. A Typeform or a Paperform costs $25/month. A Shopify page is already live.

The broader pattern is that packaging is no longer a one-way broadcast. It is now a scannable interface, and the brands that treat it as such — by linking every package to a specific, measurable conversion event — will capture owned audience while competitors are still printing Instagram handles no one types in.

The takeaway
Add a QR code to your packaging linking to one conversion goal: email capture, referral share, or educational content.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
