Maybelline extended Love Island seeding across two seasons and drove 40% lift in lip gloss demand

The brand turned reality TV's closed loop into a repeatable cast-seeding machine that shipped product before contestants hit the villa.

According to Glossy, L'Oréal-owned Maybelline expanded its Love Island partnership beyond two seasons to what the brand describes as stunning results, using the show's existing audience and cast to drive lip gloss demand. The mechanism was not a logo slap or a commercial buy. Maybelline seeded product directly to contestants before they entered the villa, ensured those SKUs appeared on-screen throughout each season, and let the cast's post-show social followings amplify the same products to millions of viewers who had already watched them in use.

Maybelline worked the calendar. The brand identified contestants early, shipped them a curated selection of lip glosses and makeup before filming, and briefed them on application. Once the season aired, those same products appeared in bathroom scenes, poolside touch-ups, and getting-ready montages. The contestants left the show with follower counts in the hundreds of thousands or millions, and Maybelline maintained the relationship. The cast posted tutorials, get-ready-with-me content, and product callouts using the identical SKUs viewers had seen on television. The loop closed when fans searched for the exact shade a contestant wore in episode four and found it in stock at the retailer.

The play works because it compresses three discrete marketing motions into one budget line. First, it secures endemic product placement without paying television rates. The show needs contestants to wear makeup, and the brand supplies it at cost. Second, it pre-builds influencer relationships before the influencer has leverage. A contestant with 5,000 followers pre-show will sign a gifting agreement; the same person with 500,000 followers post-show commands a five-figure fee. Third, it creates a closed attribution loop. The viewer sees the product on-screen, the contestant posts about it within days of the finale, and the search term spikes. Maybelline reported a 40% lift in lip gloss category performance correlated to Love Island airtime, per internal data cited by Glossy.

The steal for a small physical-product brand: identify a niche reality show, podcast with video, or YouTube series where your product category appears naturally, and the talent pool is not yet professionalized. Reach the producers or casting directors two months before production. Offer to supply your product at no cost in exchange for on-screen appearance and a post-show social clause in the talent agreement. Ship a curated kit to each participant with your three hero SKUs, a one-page how-to-use card, and a small thank-you note. Once the series airs, track which cast members gain followings, and send them a restocking shipment with a suggestion to post. The cost is product cost plus shipping. A $500 product investment can seed six to ten cast members. If one breaks through and posts organically, you have an influencer relationship you built for the cost of a sample box, and your product appeared in content watched by tens of thousands.

Maybelline is now extending the model to additional reality properties and international Love Island franchises. The lesson is not to chase the biggest show. The lesson is to enter before the talent professionalizes, ship product into the production timeline, and let the format do the storytelling work while you own the post-show amplification.

The takeaway
Seed contestants before they have leverage, let the show build the narrative, own the post-finale social amplification loop.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
