Meta Lab Opens 6 Stores in Fall 2026 to Push AI Glasses Through Physical Retail

Hardware startup doubles footprint to let customers try wearables before buying, per Modern Retail.

Meta Lab will open 6 new retail locations this fall, nearly doubling its physical store footprint as it pushes AI-enabled glasses into the consumer market, according to Modern Retail. The company sells wearable tech that integrates artificial intelligence into eyewear, a product category that historically struggled with adoption when sold online-only.

The expansion puts the brand at roughly 12 total locations by late 2026. Meta Lab walked Modern Retail through the retail strategy: physical stores exist to let customers handle the glasses, test fit and weight, and see the interface live before committing to purchase. The brand also addressed ongoing privacy concerns around wearable cameras in public spaces during the briefing.

The move works because high-consideration tech hardware needs a trial moment. Customers buying a $300-plus wearable want to know how it sits on their face, whether the voice interface feels natural, and if the camera angle captures what they expect. That evaluation happens in 90 seconds at a retail counter, not in a product video. Meta Lab is building the same trial infrastructure that drove adoption for earlier wearable categories: fitness trackers in mall kiosks, smartwatches in Apple Stores, hearing aids in audiology offices.

Physical retail also solves the returns problem. Wearables ship with 15-30 percent return rates when sold direct-to-consumer, often because fit or functionality disappointed after unboxing. A store visit collapses that loop: the customer leaves with a unit they already tested, cutting reverse logistics and improving unit economics. Meta Lab can also capture email and preference data at point of sale, then retarget for accessories or software upgrades.

The steal for a small physical-product brand: identify the one tactile or functional question your customer cannot answer from a webpage, then create a place where they experience the answer before checkout. If you sell kitchen tools, book a farmer's market booth and let people chop an onion with your knife. If you sell posture braces, set up a popup at a CrossFit gym and let athletes wear the unit through a warmup. If you sell scented candles, rent a corner table at a coworking space for a week and burn samples during lunch hours.

Start with 10-12 events over 90 days, budget $150-300 per event for space and setup, and track conversion rate from trial to sale. Bring square footage only when trial-to-sale beats your online rate by 20 percent or more. Meta Lab is scaling the same mechanic: the glasses work better when a human can explain the interface in person, so the brand is building the human network. You likely need far fewer humans than a nationwide rollout, but you need the same discipline: put the product in a customer's hand where the purchase decision happens.

The takeaway
Tech hardware scales faster through physical trial; small brands can test the mechanic at farmer's markets and popups before committing to lease.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
