M&M's runs seven genre-hopping ads in one campaign, sourcing cultural codes instead of inventing them

Mars borrows film and TV tropes to give mascot content infinite shelf life and cultural permission.

M&M's released a campaign that drops its candy mascots into seven distinct entertainment genres—crime thrillers, telenovelas, reality TV, and more—each ad playing a recognizable film or television trope straight, according to Marketing Dive. The work, created with BBDO New York, includes titles like Toasted (a mob drama spoof), No Nut November (a soap-opera parody), and Almost Toasted (a reality-TV confessional). Instead of one tonal lane, the brand runs parallel creative tracks under the same mascot system, letting audiences choose the format that lands.

The mechanism: M&M's is not creating original story arcs. It is licensing cultural grammar. Each spot follows the conventions of its source genre so closely that recognition is instant—the viewer knows the rules, the pacing, the dramatic beats before the joke arrives. That familiarity does two things: it reduces creative risk (tropes are pre-tested by decades of programming), and it allows the brand to skip setup. The candy characters become actors rotating through a casting call. The product stays constant; the genre is the variable.

This works because genre fluency is now ambient. Audiences toggle between true-crime podcasts, prestige dramas, and reality clips in a single scroll session. M&M's meets that behavior with content that matches the feed's code-switching. The strategy also extends campaign durability. Instead of exhausting one creative idea, the brand has a renewable format: when a new genre trends, it becomes the next M&M's episode. The mascots are infrastructure, not the novelty.

The steal for a small physical-product brand is straightforward: pick three recognizable formats your audience already consumes, and place your product inside them without altering the format's rules. If you sell drinkware, shoot one piece as an unboxing video (YouTube product-review grammar), one as a cooking-show B-roll insert (Food Network pacing), and one as a morning-routine vlog (TikTok cadence). Use the same product. Change only the editorial wrapper. The recognition does the persuasion work; you supply the continuity.

Cost is contained because you are not hiring genre experts—you are studying public templates and reproducing their surface structure with your phone and a $150 lav mic. Script to the trope: if you choose true crime, use the ominous voiceover and the slow zoom. If you choose soap opera, use the melodramatic pause and the over-lit close-up. The joke or the insight lives in the gap between the serious format and your mundane product. The format's credibility transfers. Your product benefits from the borrowed seriousness, then the contrast generates the share.

The broader pattern: when a brand's core asset (mascots, product design, founder personality) can be constant, variability moves to format. M&M's holds the characters stable and rotates the genre. A small brand holds the product stable and rotates the editorial lens. Both strategies extend content mileage without requiring new messaging. The audience's job is to recognize the format; your job is to place the product inside it cleanly. That swap—format variety instead of message variety—gives a single product line the content output of a media company.

The takeaway
Rotate editorial format, not product story, to multiply content without multiplying messaging work.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
