Private-label grocery brands hit 25% of US unit sales in first half 2026, widening lead over nationals

Store brands are winning on volume by designing packaging that borrows national-brand equity without the markup.

Private-label brands captured nearly a quarter of all US grocery units sold in the first half of 2026, according to Food Navigator. While national brands grew faster in dollar sales during the same period, store brands continue to expand their share of physical items leaving shelves—a packaging and perception arbitrage that any physical-product seller can study and adapt.

The mechanism is straightforward. Retailers design private-label packaging to echo the visual structure, color palette, and material cues of category leaders, then undercut on price. The shopper gets the familiar format—rigid plastic tub, matte finish, bold sans-serif type—at 15% to 30% less than the national equivalent. The store captures margin. The brand sacrifices nothing because it never existed in the consumer's consideration set as a distinct entity. The package does all the work.

This works because grocery packaging operates as a heuristic shortcut. Consumers scanning a shelf rely on shape, color, and material to identify quality tier and category fit. A private-label Greek yogurt in a sturdy round tub with a clean white field and a soft-focus fruit image reads as premium, even when the brand name is the retailer's house mark. The package borrows the equity the national brand spent years building, without licensing a single asset. Food Navigator reports that private-label growth is concentrated in categories where packaging conventions are well established—dairy, snacks, cleaning, personal care—all places where the physical format signals more than the logo.

The steal is to reverse-engineer this for your own product. Identify the top two national brands in your category. Study their packaging structure: material weight, finish, closure type, label placement, color dominants. Note the grid, the hierarchy, the negative space. Then design your package to occupy the same visual neighborhood. Use the same material grade. Match the finish. Adopt a parallel color story—if the leader uses navy and white, you use charcoal and cream. Keep your brand mark clear, but let the package architecture do the category signaling. Print a short run on demand via a flexible converter to test positioning without tooling cost. Run it on your site or a single retail test. Track conversion against your previous design. Most product brands underinvest in package structure and overspend on logo. Reverse that.

This is not counterfeiting. It is format fluency. The consumer is not confused; they are efficiently categorizing. Private-label brands do not hide their retailer parentage. They simply deploy the physical vocabulary the category has already taught the shopper to read. A small brand can do the same: let the package place you, then let the product earn the repeat. The unit-share data from 2026 suggests that when price and format align, the logo becomes optional.

The takeaway
Design your package to occupy the same material and visual tier as the category leader, then undercut on price.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub.
