GS1 mandates QR codes replace traditional barcodes by December 2027 — 50 million SKUs must convert

Sunrise 2027 shifts global retail to 2D codes; early movers gain shelf advantage and dynamic data control.

Under the Sunrise 2027 initiative, all retail point-of-sale systems must process GS1-compliant 2D barcodes by the end of 2027, according to Forbes. The mandate replaces the linear barcode standard that has governed product identification for five decades. Brands that print traditional 1D barcodes after the deadline risk rejection at retail checkout, creating an 18-month window for packaging changeover across global supply chains.

GS1, the standards body behind the Universal Product Code, published the Digital Link specification to enable 2D codes—primarily QR codes—to carry the same GTIN product identifier as a barcode while embedding additional data layers: batch numbers, expiration dates, serial numbers, and destination URLs. A single QR code on a package can route a shopper to product information, a retailer's scanner to inventory data, and a supply-chain system to authentication records. The format uses URI Syntax 1.7.0, meaning the data structure inside the QR code follows a web address pattern that machines and browsers both read.

The mechanism works because GS1 Digital Link QR codes are simultaneously machine-readable identifiers and consumer-facing links. When a retailer scans the code at checkout, the POS system extracts the GTIN and processes the transaction. When a shopper scans the same code with a phone, the embedded URL resolves to a landing page, recipe, warranty registration, or loyalty offer. Brands no longer choose between a barcode for the register and a separate QR code for marketing—they print one code that serves both functions and updates the destination without reprinting packaging.

The retail forcing function is the date certain. Major grocers, pharmacies, and mass merchants have committed to hardware and software upgrades that read 2D codes by December 2027. Brands that ship products in late 2027 with only linear barcodes will either pay for interim labeling solutions or lose shelf placement. Early adopters gain leverage: they control the URL destination, experiment with post-purchase engagement before competitors enter the space, and avoid the production crunch when printers and packaging suppliers face peak demand in Q3 and Q4 2027.

A small physical-product brand runs the play in three moves. First, obtain a GS1 Company Prefix if you do not already hold one—this is the globally recognized identifier that anchors your product codes. GS1 US sells prefixes starting at $250 annually for brands with ten or fewer products. Second, generate a GS1 Digital Link QR code that embeds your GTIN and points to a URL you control. Services now offer this capability at templates starting under $50 per SKU, or you can build it in-house if you have developer access and follow the URI Syntax 1.7.0 specification published by GS1. Third, update packaging artwork to replace or supplement the linear barcode with the 2D code, ensuring the QR module is large enough for reliable scanning—GS1 recommends a minimum 1-inch square at 300 dpi print resolution. Test the code with a retail scanner and a consumer smartphone before committing to a print run. The capital cost is the artwork change and the plate or digital file update; the operational cost is the decision about what the URL delivers when scanned.

The broader pattern is the convergence of identification and interaction. For 50 years, a barcode was a read-only ticket to a database. The GS1 Digital Link QR code is a read-write interface: the brand decides what happens after the scan, updates the destination without touching the package, and layers engagement onto the same asset that drives the transaction. Brands that treat the 2027 mandate as a compliance checkbox will reprint the same static experience in 2D. Brands that treat it as an owned media channel will control the post-scan journey and test messaging while competitors are still sourcing printers.

The takeaway
GS1 mandates 2D codes by end of 2027; early adopters control the URL and own the post-scan experience before the rush.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
