Target builds in-store K-beauty studios to pull Korean brands from Sephora and Ulta

The mass retailer now offers shelf placement and dedicated studio space to capture share from specialty beauty chains.

Target opened dedicated K-beauty studio sections inside its stores to pull Korean beauty brands away from Sephora and Ulta, according to Modern Retail. The move gives Korean cosmetics brands a mass-market foothold outside the specialty beauty channel, where distribution has historically concentrated.

The retailer created physical studio spaces within stores that showcase Korean beauty products in a dedicated environment. Target positions these studios as an alternative to the traditional beauty specialty chains, offering brands both mass visibility and a curated presentation that mirrors the in-store experience at Sephora or Ulta. The studios function as shop-in-shop concepts, creating a distinct zone for K-beauty within the larger Target beauty department.

The play works because it solves a distribution choke point. Korean beauty brands have faced limited shelf access in the United States, with Sephora and Ulta controlling most specialty beauty retail. Those chains can demand high margins, expensive promotional programs, and co-op advertising to secure prominent placement. Target's mass footprint—more than 1,900 stores nationwide—offers immediate scale without the same promotional burden. For brands, a Target placement means volume access to suburban and exurban shoppers who may not visit a Sephora regularly but still spend on beauty. For Target, K-beauty brings differentiation in a category where Walmart and CVS compete on price but not on trend.

The studio format also borrows the curation logic that made specialty beauty work. Rather than scattering K-beauty SKUs across general cosmetics aisles, Target clusters them in a branded environment. This creates a discovery experience, which drives trial. A shopper looking for mascara walks past the K-beauty studio, sees unfamiliar packaging, and converts on impulse. The studio signals newness without requiring the brand to explain itself at every touchpoint.

A small physical-product brand running a version of this play focuses on the mass-channel studio offer, not the mass-channel itself. Approach regional chains or grocery co-ops with a shop-in-shop proposal. The pitch: you build a small branded fixture (acrylic riser, printed backer card, three SKUs), you stock it weekly, and the retailer takes a standard wholesale margin with no promotional fee. Cost per fixture: under $400 for materials and monthly restock labor. The store gets a differentiated section it didn't have to merchandise. You get placement and the halo of discovery. Run the pilot in five doors, photograph the fixture in situ, then use that proof to pitch the next ten.

For brands already in a few doors, the steal is the studio expansion offer. Go back to your current retailers with a proposal to convert your single shelf into a small branded zone. Offer to supply the fixture, restock weekly, and add two new SKUs to justify the space. Frame it as their answer to what Target is doing in beauty. The retailer keeps the same margin, gains a visual story, and you double your SKU count without paying slotting. Document the lift in turn rate, then use that data to expand the studio to other categories or other chains.

The broader pattern is mass retail looking for curation to compete with specialty. As DTC brands mature and seek offline scale, the chains that offer a middle path—mass reach with curated presentation—will capture the brands Sephora and Ulta cannot or will not accommodate. Target's K-beauty studio is a signal that the next shelf war will be fought on editorial as much as price.

The takeaway
Mass retailers now compete with specialty chains by offering brands curated studio space inside stores at scale.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship.
