TripleLift case studies show offsite retail media drove 3-6x new customer growth across five verticals

Brands in beauty, toys, and food used retailer data to target shoppers beyond the retailer's site—and converted.

TripleLift released case studies in June 2026 documenting how brands in beauty, toys, food & beverage, home & living, and financial services used offsite retail media to acquire new customers, according to Morningstar. The common thread: brands took first-party purchase data from a retailer, then bought display and native ads on third-party sites to reach shoppers outside the retailer's walled garden. TripleLift reported acquisition lifts ranging from 3x to 6x across categories, though the firm did not publish absolute customer counts or spend figures.

The mechanism is straightforward. A brand partners with a retailer—grocery chain, department store, specialty shop—that holds transaction data on who bought what. The retailer anonymizes and segments that audience: frequent buyers, lapsed buyers, category shoppers who have not tried the brand. TripleLift then runs programmatic display and native ads targeting those segments on news sites, recipe blogs, lifestyle publishers. The ads carry retailer credibility—"Available at Target" or "Shop at Kroger"—and link directly to the product page on the retailer's site or a shoppable landing page. The shopper never leaves the open web; the conversion happens on the retailer's domain. TripleLift bills this as offsite retail media because the ad runs outside the retailer's owned properties but uses the retailer's data and drives traffic back to the retailer.

It worked because the targeting is purchase-based, not intent-based. A brand selling collagen powder can find women who bought competitor collagen at Whole Foods in the past 90 days, then serve them a recipe video ad on a wellness blog. The retailer's data narrows the universe from "wellness-interested" to "bought this exact category here." The creative carries implicit retailer endorsement, which lowers friction. And the landing page is the retailer's site, so the shopper completes checkout in a familiar environment. TripleLift's case studies cited beauty and toy brands running these campaigns during Q4 2025, with new-customer share of total conversions climbing 3-6x above baseline display benchmarks.

A small physical-product brand can run the same play without TripleLift's enterprise contracts. Start with one retail partner that has a media network or programmatic arm—Target RoundEl, Walmart Connect, Kroger Precision Marketing, Instacart Ads. Most now offer offsite placements bundled with onsite. Request a mixed buy: half onsite display, half offsite native or sponsored content. The retailer will use its first-party data to build lookalike and retargeting segments. Provide the retailer with three creative assets: a lifestyle shot, a product-in-use video under 15 seconds, and a single headline focused on availability ("Now at Kroger" or "Find it at Target"). Budget $2,000-$5,000 for a 30-day test. Insist on a post-campaign report breaking out new-customer conversions versus repeat. If new-customer share exceeds 20% of total attributed sales, double the offsite portion and run it again.

The broader pattern is retail media expanding beyond the retailer's site. Offsite placements let brands buy retailer data and retailer credibility without competing for homepage real estate. For a challenger brand, that means reaching a grocery chain's shoppers on a cooking blog at a fraction of the onsite cost-per-click, with the same transaction data behind the targeting. The next move: test one retailer's offsite program this quarter, document new-customer rate, then pitch the same structure to a second retailer next quarter with the first retailer's results as proof.

The takeaway
Offsite retail media uses retailer purchase data to target ads on third-party sites, driving new customers at documented 3-6x lifts.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
